What to expect at a Restraining Order hearing

On your court date (hearing)

Try to arrive early so you have enough time to go through security. Be prepared to spend a few hours at the courthouse. How long it takes will depend on when your case is called and how complicated your case is. If you have children with the other side, your case will likely take more time.

Do I need a lawyer?

You do not need a lawyer in this case but you can choose to hire a lawyer. This kind of case is a civil case and in civil cases you are not entitled to a lawyer. In some counties, if you are low-income legal aid will provide you a lawyer for free, especially if you are the one being abused. <link>  You can also hire a lawyer on your own.
